Denali – Great News for the High End
There is so much in this new release of Denali that it will take days to touch on the capabilities they have added. Much of the capability is no longer just a part of the BI suite built around SQL Server. Changes to extend all of the features now permeate Microsoft Office and even the next release of Windows itself.

The keynote speakers from PASS reflected on the growth of the SQL Server product and the evolution of their vision for it’s place in the marketplace. When SQL Server split off from the Sybase branch one of the first things Microsoft did was to create user friendly GUI interfaces for managing database objects. In the process, they added COM capabilities wrapping SQL Tables, etc. with objects and methods through SQL DMO. Their success has matured to the point where few SQL Server administrators low level tools to do day to day maintenance.

With this release, the same approach has been applied to not only database and BI development, but to the end user experience and presentation as well. SQL Server 2008 R2 was a glimpse of what will be released in Denali. With Power pivot we are able to mine data from analysis services with incredible speed. Using Excel as the mining tool allows Excel power users the ability to extend their current knowledge base and apply it to massive amounts of data without relying on IT to provide the data they require. They can FIND it themselves. That really is the point of BI; find an interesting number, and determine what caused that number.

Again Microsoft provides tools for the developers as well. They provide capabilities to share schema and data freely. Version control is built into many of the tools. A nice package that makes any developer thrill at the power in their hands.

Not finished yet, Denali takes the next step in providing resources for those who manage databases. Additional sets of tools are available to monitor, manage, move, optimize and deploy databases. Enhancing performance they have released the capability for the Parallel Data Warehouse taking the SQL Server and supporting services to an even higher level. Can you imagine SQL Server running on 64 CPUs? That has just got to scream.

What do you need to get all this stuff?

MS Office 2010 Pro (if you want Access as well) for those doing data mining
SQL Server
SQL Server Analysis Services
SQL Server Integration Services
Share Point Services
Visual Studio Team Edition for all developers working with your BI or Database tools
Visual Studio Team Server

So, great news for big shops with big budgets. They even have an appliance type product where vendors partnering with Microsoft will provide already pre-configured and loaded hardware and software ready to go. You just create your new database with a nice wizard. Consulting services are available as needed. This is a great deal to get up and going in no time. No mistakes in hardware configuration or anything. Just plug and go.

So far, I am seeing little in the Denali release for the majority of the users of SQL Server. It may be hidden in all of the great new features. Perhaps some of the cool features will work with the lower end versions.

Regardless, be sure to take a look at the demonstrations and the CTP released last week. It’s a new approach on an old problem giving a great deal of capability to the people who can solve problems best. Once you get over the shock, I think you’re going to like it.

Let me know what you like about the new Denali release? How have your test configurations gone with the CTP? Are there other updates you have had to make in order to get things to work? Send comments to btaylor@sswug.org.

Cheers,

Ben
