ODBC to Become the New Microsoft SQL Server Connectivity Standard
Microsoft has announced that it will be phasing out support for the proprietary OLE DB database driver in SQL Server. This is a bit of old news…but something you are going to need to take into account sooner or later.
The next release of SQL Server code named Denali will be the last version supporting the OLE DB database driver. Instead, Microsoft is moving back to the ODBC database driver because they determine it to be a more transportable technology.
Today using ADO.Net, or other MS database connectivity techniques shipping with Dot Net, the standard SQL Server connection is done using OLE DB, which utilizes the COM architecture.
Microsoft says we have 7 Years to make the transition to the ODBC protocol, which has been supported in SQL Server all along. They recommend we start transitioning to ODBC sooner than later.
Here is a link to a social media FAQ from Microsoft with Q & A answering questions regarding the impact to you and your applications today and in the future. There are some differences in capabilities due to the fact that the ODBC standard is not designed around the uniqueness of SQL Server alone.
PASS Begins this Week
The SQL Server PASS Summit begins this week in Redmond. Many will be watching to see if Microsoft announces the next release date of SQL Server.
For those of you attending, there is a great opportunity championed by a number of friends of SSWUG where you may donate items for a homeless shelter in Seattle. Check out tweets at #SQLGive. Chris Shaw shares more details in his blog at http://chrisshaw.wordpress.com/2011/10/05/sqlgive/ where he lists items that are being sought and places where you can drop your donations off at the PASS summit.
Drop us a note with your experiences at PASS. Send them to btaylor@sswug.org.
Cheers,
Ben
