Got such a kick out of this update article we found – that dBase is being updated and new features added to it. I don’t know about you, but I didn’t realize it was still available – pretty cool to see it up and running. Some very intriguing tools now included, from query building tools to reporting and other goodies.
Follow-Up – Privacy, Big Data and Data Responsibilities
Yesterday I wrote about the fact the privacy policies (both yours and other sources) are sure to impact your use of information particularly when it comes to incorporating social streams in your data analysis.
While I think we’re on the verge of beating the processing challenges of very large databases, the challenges remain when it comes to policies and data morals. Some additional information and thought is here. Perhaps most interesting is the plethora of talks at GigaOM talking about the challenges with Big Data – from Getting Beyond the Cult of Big Data to Big Data Analytics and others that point to the challenges and pressure on "Big Data" as a technology to perform.
If we’re not careful, we’ll end up with executive expectations at such levels that it’ll be tough to get the job done. Not that we need to pull down expectations, but we do need to manage the timelines and processes (and incredible learning curves) associated with successful Big Data projects.
I think as next releases of the major databases products become production reality it’ll be interesting to see how the definition of Big Data changes, how it gets incorporate into the fold and whether the standards evolve or we’re left to develop individual standards for data use.
What projects are you involved in with Big Data? What suggestions do you have? Shoot me a note, let me know (or comment below).
