Is Software Holding You Back?

Is Software Holding You Back?

Today I want to write about something that is probably common sense. But it is on my mind, so I thought I would just get it out. The question I have is, “how often does software hold us back?”

I have been using a number of products from a number of vendors and have been held up from utilizing new features because the vendors have increased the price of the products dramatically. No longer are the products practicable for any but the largest companies with more expansive budgets.

Sometimes we take a gamble on open systems products hoping that they will continue to garner support from the community at large to keep them from becoming stale. Many continue to be best of breed, and are but poorly copied by the be all vendor with their all-inclusive packages.

I have wanted to use Tuples since they were released in Dot Net. But I was working within a package that was too expensive to upgrade, and the license we had stopped at version 3.5.

Do you have the same experience where you need to move on, but are blocked by strategic purchases of the past? Do you use open system code with fear it may become obsolete without further updates? Get into the conversation with how you have solved your software roadblocks by leaving a comment below, or dropping an Email to btaylor@sswug.org.

Cheers,

Ben
