Splice Machine

Splice Machine
How would you like to have one data engine supporting all your application needs including OLAP and OLTP. Generally, the needs of either environment require an engine specifically tuned for each. My colleague, Jason, forwarded to me an Email from Splice Machine regarding their new engine targeted to create one engine to fulfill both OLTP and BIG Data Mining with a single platform

Splice Machine is built on top of the Hadoop and HBase stacks. This allows for Big Data applications written in a traditional No-SQL manner. However, they have also added an SQL interface filling the gaps in the OLTP features missing from most No-SQL engines. They added SQL, transactions, secondary indexes and joins as a feature set allowing it to compete with MySQL or Oracle implementations, with the ability to scale out.

I would guess that you wouldn’t try to operate both kinds of applications in a single environment. But having one stack to maintain would have a huge value for many organizations. Given enough horsepower I suppose you could integrate both OLTP and OLAP…but I would have to test the tool quite a bit before making that commitment.

If you are interested and want to find out more about Splice Machine you can find them at http://www.splicemachine.com. I’d be interested in reader feedback regarding the value of this kind of tool in their world. Drop me an email at btaylor@sswug.org, or leave a comment here.

Cheers,
