What If?

Let’s say you just became responsible for the development and management of your companies database systems. Describe your next thirty days. This question came to me from a couple of different directions. One was a white paper for third party database management tools. Another was a web site for performing technical interviews, something I really enjoy participating in.

Many of you are not currently accidental DBAs. In fact, many of you are seasoned veterans. Given that background, what are the things you would do in the first 30 days of taking on new responsibilities for systems completely new to you?

Is disaster recovery your first concern? How about performance or capacity? Do you simply need an assessment of what hardware, software and applications are being provisioned? What is your staffing and what are their skills?

Share your thoughts on the first 30 days. What would you do? Add your comments here or drop an email to btaylor@sswug.org.

Cheers,

Ben
