It Really Does Happen

In response to what to do in your First 30 Days, Daniel shares what his priorities may be. It appears that Daniel was not what Stephen Wynkoop affectionately calls the Accidental DBA; however, his receiving the roll of decision maker was unexpected and abrupt. This does happen.

Daniel writes:

Ugh… I just went through this…

I don’t know if my approach is appropriate or enough but it is the path I took. It was following a death.

  • Identify and verify inventory of servers, systems, databases
  • Identify authority figures because you aren’t going to be able to tell everything from your perspective
  • Identify monitoring tool/method used and verify that your inventory is covered for monitoring
  • Verify alert configuration is functional on each server in the inventory
  • Verify backup storage location and utilization. Address anything that may be an issue before it flanks you
  • Identify and verify backup strategy, timing type and testing.
  • Identify and verify the storage and utilization on each server to identify any individual systems that may be problematic
  • Identify the security configuration by server/system so that you understand how to handle requests

Thoughts on what I should have included? Any help welcome!

We have a couple of people sharing their experiences. What would you chance if anything? Add your thoughts here, or like Daniel, drop me an email to btaylor@sswug.org.

Cheers,

Ben
