Be a Valuable Employee

How do you bring value to your Employer? In most cases it is more than just putting in a full day work. Here are some observations I have found over the years applying to those in the IT profession.

Always learning: It is a nice bonus when your employer allows you to attend conferences or sends you to training for other tools. Don’t forget that continuing education is your own responsibility, and is often done on your own time and your own dime. Your employer didn’t pay for you to go to college; but, that was what helped you acquire your job. The same continues to be true throughout your whole career.

Always sharing: No single person can know or do it all. If you want to have the opportunity to try and do new things, then you need to duplicate yourself. Don’t become a knowledge silo. Share what you know and what you do with others. It helps them to grow, and frees you from always having to be there.

Always excellent: Make sure that what you deliver is always excellent. That is not defined as perfect. It is defined as the best solution at the right time. Often this may be out of your influence. As much as it is within your power, strive to be excellent.

These are some thoughts I felt are appropriate as we are coming to a new year with a new vision. I hope yours is going to be awesome.

Cheers,

Ben
