Virtual Eduction in SSIS and SSRS
A while back Steve provided some great insight on how to grow your skills as an SQL Professional. Take one new topic at a time, and expand on what you already know. The reality we face every day is that SQL Server consists of a number of technologies that are quite extensive; it is a big challenge to remain on the top of all the different tools. So, here is an opportunity for you to bite off a piece of the BIG Elephant a small piece at a time.

SQL Server MVP Eric Johnson has put together a virtual training series on SQL Server Integration Services (data import, export and transformation tool) and SQL Server Replication. Both of these are BIG topics. Eric provides you with access to these tools for the entire month of December, and you also have an option to purchase a DVD of the course.

Find out more about the SQL Server Integrations Services Virtual Training Course or the SQL Server Replication Virtual Training Course. Don’t wait for someone else to help you extend your knowledge. Dig in now and be ready for those opportunities when they come.

Surviving the Holidays
Are you prepared for the upcoming holidays? I’m not talking about expanding your ability to eat, or getting ready to start working out in January. Of course I’m thinking about how to enjoy time away from the office and having confidence that your systems remain solid for those who need them. For the accidental DBA this is an even more important question.

I like lists…so here is a list of some things that you should have in place anyway. It becomes more useful when you are away from the office, and you need to take time away sometime.

  • Configure your servers with alerts
At least setup standard alerts on your servers for network connectivity, disk space restrictions
If you have a baseline, CPU and Memory stress could be added in
  • Make sure your backups are automated, and you are alerted when they fail
  • Configured Alerts for if your system is accessible are helpful
There are services for web applications that will test your website and alert you when it can not connect
  • You may need to establish a custom performance alert that can’t be based on other system factors
  • If possible, establish remote access to your systems in case you need to make adjustments

If you don’t have operations people assisting you then some of these ideas can be helpful:

  • Email your logs to yourself so you can review them without requiring remote access
  • Implement a third party monitoring tool.
These are often web based and provide the alerts listed above along with many more other useful features and alerts
They also provide trending features that are helpful for debugging when things slow down
  • Consider outsourcing staff to supplement you

Got some other tips you’d like to share. Send them on to me at btaylor@sswug.org and we’ll get them posted for our readers.

Cheers,

Ben
