Chris Shaw’s Report from SQL Server Connections in Florida
Today was filled with another with 25 sessions that ranged from SQL Server 2008 in the Enterprise to deep discussions on the new Resource Governor.

I was really surprised by the number of people in the 8:00 AM sessions! Usually it’s tough to get people to the first sessions of the day. It appears that Microsoft Day really drove up the number of attendees that want to hear about the new features in SQL Server 2008. No surprise that the Starbucks line was long, while everyone is shaking off the sleep from last night.

One of the things that I decided to do today was to visit a session that was given by a non-Microsoft speaker and compare that to a Microsoft speaker — both speaking on the Resource Governor. It seems to be a popular topic of the conference and I can understand why.

What I find very helpful about going to both sessions, was the ability to see where Microsoft wants to take the new technology and then compare that approach to what advanced users are seeing in the recent CTP.

Both sessions were very strong and gave me a lot of information on the Resource Governor, but the different points of view about how this technology can be used were great to see. All of it was great information and good food for thought, I can’t wait to see the final release.

As I sat through sessions today I got more excited about SQL Server 2008. When I read the feature list prior to this conference, I got a glance at what the abilities of SQL Server 2008 will be. But, as I watched the demos this week on Polices, Configuration Servers, and running a single query across multiple servers (among other things), I can really see how SQL Server 2008 is becoming much friendlier to DBA’s that manage hundreds of servers.

I finished off the day with a great session on SQL Server and Virtualization. I’ve never been a DBA that is ready to start implementing new technology as soon as it comes out, but it looks like there has been a lot of work on creating virtual servers and really looks promising, even in this relatively early incarnation. From the looks of the demos, and the experiences that have been had with it, it may be something I will look into.

At the end of the day, I have to say it has been another great day at SQL Connections. My feet are a little sore (lots of walking!) but I have absorbed a lot of information that I cannot wait to test!
