It’s Not Just What You Know
What is your greatest asset as an IT Professional? If you are looking for work it is generally experience. But to retain your job, your best asset is your ability to learn.

This is common knowledge to most of us who have been working with Information Technology for more than a couple years. The tools that we use today will be obsolete tomorrow.

So, I’ve been thinking about what barriers keep us from learning new technologies. For me the issue is often time. If I can’t have a project that requires new technology, I don’t have time to learn it. There is plenty to do just to keep the lights on. I don’t find a new technology and look for a problem to solve; I measure problems against known technology and new technology and determine if its time to move on,

This means I do have to at least be aware of what tools and techniques are available in order to assess opportunities. That’s one of the reasons I like SSWUG. It is a great place to find out about new and emerging technologies.

Sometimes I think we just get stuck. We find a comfort zone where we know how to get things done quickly and accurately. Throwing new technology into the mix is just too painful; and sometimes the new technologies don’t have enough enhancement to justify change.

So what is holding you back. I’d really like to hear from our members about the barriers for keeping current. You can share your thoughts with me at btaylor@sswug.org.

Cheers,
Ben
