Final SQL Server 2008 Feedback Items
Just a few more SQL Server 2008 migration feedback bits to share – it seems that most are taking the update in stride and rolling it out as needed, as I mentioned before.

Daniel: "We are constrained by the technical maturity of our industry. Some of the products we are dependent are still built for Windows 2000 and not yet supporting Win2k3 much less Win2k8 so we will probably not be considering SQL 2k8 until much later in its life…

We are looking at it from a development and skill set perspective.
"

This is an interesting point too – rather than waiting for a specific feature, or specific service pack or whatever, one of the key considerations does indeed need to be the availability of resources (people) that can support the platform. That can take a bit of time after a release.

Steve: "[O]ur organization is just starting to roll out SQL 2005 this quarter to non-production environments. We hope that they start HA SQL 2005 environment Q1 2009, but that hasn’t been set yet. SQL 2008 is not being discussed. "

Kirk: "We will probably have a couple SQL2008 instances set up for special projects requiring the new features (spatial). The vast majority [of our] servers will NOT be upgraded. Personally, I am worried about the quality if it is released in August and may wait until SP1 before much gets into our production environment."

I have to say, from what I’ve seen personally and in testing circles, the release seems really solid at this point. Still in beta, but I’ve not seen any show-stopping issues. I also think the different development approach of treating each feature almost independently from others (we’ll release no feature before its time…) makes a lot of sense and should result in very stable releases. Time will tell, of course, but that’s what I’ve seen thus far.
