Allison: "DBA’s should not be scared of SharePoint but rather try to learn as much as possible about the architecture and functionality of the entire system. I’ve been working with it for about 5 years now as both a DBA and SharePoint Administrator, have a SharePoint MCTS, and find that it is extremely helpful when it comes to troubleshooting and everyone is pointing fingers at SQL.

The number one thing to remember is MS does NOT support any changes made directly in the database schema. I believe the real reason is that service packs and hot-fixes will often make changes to the databases. If you do need to query anything from a SharePoint database always use the NOLOCK hint. Do not believe developers when they say they need direct database access. Any data they may need is available via the SharePoint API, they just have to learn how to code against it.

Size wise we try to keep our content databases under 100G primarily for maintenance and DR efficiency.

Mary: "I wish someone would have informed me that the Sharepoint SQL install needed additional collation settings defined (see pic below if needed). You need to add Accent-sensitive, Kana-sensitive and Width-sensitive to the collation during install or you will need to reinstall SQL."
