Recently I have been forced (for medical reasons) to take some time away from work. My situation is such that cannot work remotely. So, what to do? I can’t move around. I’ll quickly bore with movies Hey, how about taking an intentional training sabbatical, and catch up on all these new technologies I want to catch up on?
Well, that’s what I’m doing. There are a number of areas where I want to improve my skills. I started out randomly, addressing the area where I want to know more the most. I’m finding that, while this is really valuable, I want to turn the process into something more substantial. Here are some boundaries I am beginning to wrap around my studies.
- Find training that meets my current expertise…I don’t want to not understand what I am studying because I don’t have prerequisites.
- Find training that fits together. For example, learning JavaScript, TypeScript and JQuery goes well togther.
- Find Courses you can complete in a day.
- It’s cool if you can take a test from the course, and add it to you profile with Linked-In etc.
- It helps if you can create your own mini project to help solidify what you have learned.
I’m having such a good time by using this concentrated period to focus completely on new things that I’m quite sure I will schedule this again in the future. I’ve been trying to do this an hour each day, and haven’t been able to make this kind of progress. So, I consider it an investment in my ongoing education in the world of software and information systems.
Cheers,
Ben
