Troubleshooting SQL Server 2014 Reporting Services

If you have problems with SQL Server 2014 Reporting Services (SSRS 2014), review this
troubleshooting checklist to find potential solutions.

1. Install the latest SQL Server 2014 service pack.

Because many SQL Server 2014 Reporting Services bugs were fixed in SQL Server service
packs, you should install the latest SQL Server service pack.
At the time this article was written the latest SQL Server 2014 service pack was service
pack 1. You can download the SQL Server 2014 service pack 1 at here:

2. The Remote Registry service crashes on the computer with SSRS 2014 installed
when you run an application on another computer that tries to retrieve the
Performance Counter data for the instance of SSRS 2014 remotely.

This problem occurs because the SSRS 2014 Performance Counter uses an incorrect method
to access a registry key. This bug was first fixed in Cumulative Update package 1 for
SQL Server 2014. You can download the Cumulative Update package 1 for SQL Server 2014

3. Report Builder may close unexpectedly when you search an attribute in Query Designer
in SQL Server 2014.

This problem occurs when you select “Entire data source” as the search range and the
large result set will be returned. This bug was first fixed in Cumulative Update package 1
for SQL Server 2014. You can download the Cumulative Update package 1 for SQL Server 2014

4. You cannot create a data-driven subscription when the driving query takes longer
than 30 seconds to execute.

This problem occurs because the query cannot be validated. This bug was first fixed in

5. SSRS 2014 may fail when the subscriptions that are exported to Excel worksheets are
larger than 10 MB.

In this case, the following error message occurs: “Unable to determine the identity of
domain.” This bug was first fixed in Cumulative Update package 3 for SQL Server 2014.

6. SSRS 2014 report is cut horizontally after you apply cumulative security update
for Internet Explorer.

This problem occurs in Internet Explorer 9 and Internet Explorer 10 only. This bug was
first fixed in Cumulative Update package 4 for SQL Server 2014. You can download the
Cumulative Update package 4 for SQL Server 2014 at here:

To work around this problem, you can use Internet Explorer 11.

7. When you print a report that contains tablix with two or more groups, the
error occurs.

This is the error message text: “An error occurred during printing. ( 0x80004005)”.
This problem occurs when the LayoutDirection is set to RTL in SSRS 2014. This bug was
first fixed in Cumulative Update package 4 for SQL Server 2014. You can download the
Cumulative Update package 4 for SQL Server 2014 at here:

To work around this problem, you can set the LayoutDirection to LTR.

8. Report format is misaligned when you view the report that has “Text Box” or
“Gauges” report items.

This problem occurs when you use Internet Explorer 11. This bug was first fixed in
Cumulative Update package 4 for SQL Server 2014. You can download the Cumulative Update
package 4 for SQL Server 2014 at here:

To work around this problem, you can add the report URL into the compatibility view list
of Internet Explorer 11 or use an earlier version of Internet Explorer to view the report.

9. The error occurs, when you set rotation of chart series label greater than 90 or
less than -90 in an SSRS 2014 report.

This bug was first fixed in Cumulative Update package 6 for SQL Server 2014. You can

10. The error occurs when you review a report that contains two datasets that
connect to a SharePoint list.

This is the error message text: “An item with the same key has already been added.”

11. The ImageConsolidation device information setting does not work when it is
specified in the RSReportServer.config file.

To work around this problem, you can pass The ImageConsolidation device information
setting through a URL access.

12. The alerting database does not clean up old data when you use alerts for
SSRS 2014 reports.

This problem occurs with Microsoft SharePoint Server 2013 and Microsoft SharePoint
Server 2010 only. This bug was first fixed in Cumulative Update package 7 for

13. When you create a subscription for a report that has one or more parameters
configured, the queries that contain subscription parameters are sent to the
data source engine multiple times.

This problem occurs if you select “Override Report Default” for the parameters.

14. The error occurs when you upload an SSRS report that contains many expressions
to Reporting Services Report Manager.

This is the error message text: “[BC30494] line is too long”. This problem occurs when
report uses more than 1000 text boxes. This bug was first fixed in Cumulative Update
package 7 for SQL Server 2014. You can download the Cumulative Update package 7 for

To work around this problem, you can move sections of the report into a separate
subreport so that each report uses less than 1000 text boxes.

15. Data-driven subscription with email notification shows “0 errors” when email
delivery fails in SSRS 2014.

16. Cannot schedule a subscription in an SSRS 2014 report when the data source is
SAP NetWeaver Business Intelligence type.

In this case, the error occurs. This is the error message text: “ThreadAbortException:
