SQL Server Security (Part II)
There’s a great article in Information Week about the different layers that you need to be considering for your networks. It talks specifically about the different segments that need attention, and the different technologies that are needed to address them.

I really thought their diagram was excellent- you can see the "decision points" – where the network and tools decide on access rights and such.

There should be decision points in your organization as well – points of authority where people can decide on access, functionality, etc. There should also be checks and balances built in. If a specific authority level is being considered for assignment to a given individual or application, there should be some check that says that that entry point should indeed be granted.

Absent from this is specific information addressing database security (it’s embedded, really, in the "Application" item of the graphic, but still…) – but you get the idea. It’s good to have the layers and good to have the decision points.
