Webcast: SQL Server and SharePoint Data Integration
SharePoint’s Data View web part can do much more than just view data. It can serve as a complete front-end to your SQL Server (and other data store) information allowing you to create robust applications without writing code. In this session, you will see just how to create such an application including conditional graphics. You’ll even learn how to pass data from SQL Server into a SharePoint Designer workflow for business process automation.

Import/Export Options (Part 1 of 3)
We’re going to spend a little bit of time in this session talking about import/export options, and the things that are available to you in the SQL Server Native Tools about how to get data quickly in and out of SQL Server. This is something that perplexes database developers quite a bit, in terms of “Well, how do I get sample data into my system?” Or, “How do I get data from another source into the database that I’m working with; how can I load that? We’ll spend a little bit of time just talking about a couple of tools that are available to you in terms of the Import/Export Wizard, and how we can go about generating files that are necessary to use for importing and exporting data.

SQL Server Management Basics Workshop
I thought I would take a moment to raise awareness the the workshop SSWUG is presenting tomorrow (Wednesday). Why, you ask? I think this 4 hour workshop will provide value to many of our readers.

SQL Server does not just run…performance degrades with time, and hardware never lasts forever. As more and more small businesses use SQL Server they require disaster recovery and tuning tasks be performed consistently on a scheduled basis. Sometimes developers or lucky individuals become the keeper of the database. Often Small Business Owners perform those tasks themselves.

Due to the value of SQL Server, it is growing in popularity as the data engine behind many commercial software products to the point you may not even be aware that you have an SQL Server database supporting your application.

The course provides you the essential information you need in order to effectively manage your databases. It covers the basic topics like,

  • – What should you be monitoring?
  • – What do you need to know about security?
  • – What is important for essential recovery options for your systems?
  • – How do you set up procedures to make sure you’re covered?
  • – What do you need to know about jobs, tasks and scheduling?
  • – …and a lot more.

What about those of you who have been managing SQL Server for a long time. Are there some tips and techniques that are new since you put together your processes? Have you updated your optimization scripts to take advantage of the new systems views and functions? I know I always learn something new because many of "the old ways" become obsolete with each release of SQL Server. For example, I wrote an article posted here on SSWUG about automating the defragmentation and updating of statistics in your database. Recently I had to re-write the whole source taking advantage of the systems views and functions released in SQL Server 2005.

If you are like me, I take gold anywhere I can find it. This may be the opportunity for you. Hope to see you Online.

Cheers,
Ben
