Virtual Eduction in SSIS and SSRS
A while back Steve provided some great insight on how to grow your skills as an SQL Professional. Take one new topic at a time, and expand on what you already know. The reality we face every day is that SQL Server consists of a number of technologies that are quite extensive; it is a big challenge to remain on the top of all the different tools. So, here is an opportunity for you to bite off a piece of the BIG Elephant a small piece at a time.

SQL Server MVP Eric Johnson has put together a virtual training series on SQL Server Integration Services (data import, export and transformation tool) and SQL Server Replication. Both of these are BIG topics. Eric provides you with access to these tools for the entire month of December, and you also have an option to purchase a DVD of the course.

Find out more about the SQL Server Integrations Services Virtual Training Course or the SQL Server Replication Virtual Training Course. Don’t wait for someone else to help you extend your knowledge. Dig in now and be ready for those opportunities when they come.

SQL Server Standard With Big Data
Jeffrey responds today with news about how they reduce the footprint of an entire database, regardless of version, by mounting the database on a compressed drive.

They use a product from RedGate called SQL Storage Compress. He says, "This allows DBA’s who are not running SQL 2008 EE to get compression equivalent to or better than ROW or PAGE level compression…including filestream."

I had to go look at the product at RedGate. It’s not cheap (more than $2000 retail). But the cost is much less than an upgrade to SQL Server Enterprise, especially if you are licensing per CPU.

The implementation uses HyperBac first to create a compressed backup (cool in it’s own right). Then, having installed SQL Storage Compress you restore your backup using SQL Storage Compress, and SQL Server is able to work with the data files as if they were not compressed. Now you have smaller backups because of compression, and more disk space for your live data as well.

You’ll need to make your own performance comparisons. RedGate has trial downloads so you should be able to see for yourself if this product will work for you.

I’d be interested to know if you could create multiple data files, and have some compressed and the others not. That could be a really flexible way to deal with your BLOB data.

Thanks Jeffrey for the compression tip.

If you have other tips how to extend the power of SQL Server Standard for the SMB, send them on to me, and I’ll post them for us all.

Cheers,
Ben
